On a relation among the p-adic groups E_6, D_4, and G_2
ABSTRACT
In our recent work on the Hiraga–Ichino–Ikeda conjecture for p-adic G_2, we found that a key step hinges on an irreducibility statement for representations of p-adic split E_6. In this talk, we give a precise formulation of the irreducibility theorem, explain how it arose naturally from our study of G_2, and sketch the main ideas of its proof.
