TITLE | Existence, stability, and instability of 2D vortex equilibria |
ABSTRACT | Persistence of large scale vortex structures in two-dimensional flows strongly suggest their stability. We look at some sources of dynamical stability: conservation laws, variational principles, and incompressibility. Furthermore, variational methods can be applied to produce non-trivial steady or traveling-wave solutions. Lastly, we discuss how stability can be used to prove instability, or small scale creation, for perturbations. |
