Topology and geometry in two and three dimensions
Thomas Koberda studies geometric topology and group theory. Much of his recent work has centered around groups acting on manifolds and related spaces. He is particularly interested in the relationship between the algebraic structure of finitely generated groups and the regularity with which they can act on a given compact manifold. Koberda is interested in the structure and properties of many classes of finitely generated groups, including mapping class groups, right-angled Artin groups, hyperplane arrangement groups, 3-manifold groups, and thin subgroups of semisimple Lie groups.
